Aspergillus fumigatus. Secale cereale (Råg). Cladosporium herbarum. Gräs pollen. Triticum aestivum (Vete). Gräspollenmix. Zea mays (Majs). Jästsvamp.

There are approximately 180 species of Aspergillus, but fewer than 40 of them are known to cause infections in humans. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common cause of human Aspergillus infections. Other common species include A. flavus, A. terreus, and A. niger. Colonization of Aspergillus fumigatus can be found in horses, cows, dogs, cats, and birds. In most of these animals listed above, infection rates average between five and ten percent of a population (Bennet, J.W. and M.A. Klich 1992), yet it is much higher in avian populations.

This species is the most common agent of aspergillosis in both man and animals. It is a thermophilic species (growth at 40°C and beyond) that may be extremely angioinvasive, particularly in the compromised patient. Hyphae in tissue may or may not display 45° angle branching. Fruiting heads may be seen in air cavities in the lung. Aspergillosis is an infection caused by a type of mold (fungus).

Aspergillus fumigatus causes infection in humans more often than any other Aspergillus species. People who handle or who are exposed extensively to Aspergillus fumigatus often develop a hypersensitivity to it so that they develop severe allergic reactions to the mold. Aspergillus fumigatus is often found growing in decomposing organic material.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a saprophytic fungus that plays an essential role in recycling environmental carbon and nitrogen (235, 506, 676). Its natural ecological niche is the soil, wherein it survives and grows on organic debris.

Aspergillus spp. is a ubiquitous fungus in the environment with high sporulation capacity [ 7, 8 ]. After Aspergillus sporulates, conidia with a diameter of 2–3 μm are released into the air, enter the airway, and reach alveoli [ 9 ].
